The Three Cardinal Virtues (Da-Da-Da)

The Three Cardinal Virtues (Da-Da-Da)

In a famous parable, the creator Prajapati gives one syllable—“Da”—to gods, humans, and demons. Each interprets it differently based on their flaws:

  • Damyata: Practice self-control (for the gods).
  • Datta: Give generously (for greedy humans).
  • Dayadhvam: Be compassionate (to cruel demons).

Beautiful question, @Dr. Nidhi.

When I first came across this story of Da–Da–Da couple of years back, I thought it is simply a moral teaching. But over time, through working with clients and observing my own life, I realized it is actually a mirror. Depending on where I am in my life, the same “Da” speaks differently to me.

These three "Da"s feel like three reminders in my everyday life.

Damyata asks me to pause before reacting.

Datta inspires me to give, not just money, but also time, kindness and a listening ear.

Dayadhvam says that everyone is fighting a battle we may not know about, so choosing compassion is always worthwhile.

Prajapati gave everyone the same syllable, yet each heard what they needed most. Maybe that’s how wisdom works…it speaks differently to each of us depending on where we are in life.

A simple teaching, yet one that can guide us every single day. :folded_hands:

Wonderful thought and wonderful way of explanation, literally @kobrakulsh, Supreethi, you keep a depth in every answer. Whatever I’ve read up until now, shat shat naman to knowledge you have :folded_hands: :folded_hands: :folded_hands::folded_hands:
